Asthma Medications and Pregnancy
In the past, pregnant women have been advised to refrain from using their asthma medications during the course of their pregnancy. However, based on a review of existing data, it has been established that "it is safer for pregnant women with asthma to be treated with asthma medications than it is for them to have asthma symptoms and exacerbations."

Apparently, while the medications might have undesirable side effects, the impact of untreated asthma attacks may deprive the fetus of oxygen which may subsequently lead to more serious complications such as increased prematurity, growth restriction, other fetal complications, and morbidity and mortality in women.

Thus, the current recommendation by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is that pregnant asthmatic women should continue to use their asthma medication in the lowest dose possible to manage asthma symptoms during pregnancy.

In addition, they are advised to avoid exposure to allergens, smoke, and other irritants which may trigger an asthma attack. Read the Doc Guide for more.
