Caffeine and Pregnancy

Now that you're pregnant, should you give up coffee and other caffeine-containing beverages?

While there have been numerous studies in animals that have shown that caffeine may cause many pregnancy and reproductive health-related problems such birth defects, preterm delivery, reduced fertility, and increase the risk of low-birth weight offspring, there have been no conclusive data that shows the same in humans. Of course, where you or your baby is concerned, it is better safe and sorry. That's not to say that you must totally avoid coffee, cola, and company; moderation is key. According to the American Pregnancy Association:
Experts and studies have stated that "moderate" levels of caffeine have not been found to have a negative effect on pregnancy. The definition of "moderate" varies anywhere from 150 mg - 300 mg a day.
The important thing then is to find out just how much caffeine is hidden in your favorite cuppa (or soda, tea or chocolate. A 16 oz Grande from Starbucks contains about 400 mg, while green tea contain about a tenth of that (40 mg). Note that some pain relievers also contain caffeine, so read labels carefully.
