What other steps can you take to prepare your home for that bundle of joy arriving soon?
Here, from Parenthood.com, are some suggestions for getting your home ready for baby:
- The right crib. A post-1992 crib meeting American Society for Testing and Material is prescribed with a snugly fitting mattress, no decoratively carved headboard or elevated corner posts and slats not more than 2 3/8 inches apart.
- The right playpen. One with openings in the mesh not more than ¾ inch wide and no tears or small holes or wooden playpen with the same dimension requirements as above for openings between slats.
- The right precautions. Night light at least three feet away from crib, bed and draperies and a safety belt for baby's changing table with rug beneath in case of falls.
Once your baby is walking around, Parenthood.com recommends:
- Ban small objects. If it can fit within a cardboard toilet paper roll it's too small to be allowed near baby.
- Get rid of crib toys. If the baby can reach the mobile or hanging toys that delighted him or her in the first few months, it's time for them to go.
- Think tall. Shorten draperies and drapery or blind chords and keep dangerous substances well out of reach.
- Think outside the box. Drill holes into any toy chest or remove the lid to avoid entrapment or pinched fingers.
