While I haven't much to complain about pregnancy, I am absolutely terrified of giving birth. And yes, this being my second time doesn't make it any easier. I had a complicated experience the first time around and knowing that it could be the same (or totally different) makes me a nervous wreck.
I delivered my first child in Europe, where a midwife supervises the birth, and a doctor is only brought in if medical complications arose. My midwife was the epitome of patience and encouragement. She believed that I could do it and was my source of strength during those hours I was in labor and pain. It did help that I read up all I could about childbirth way before my delivery date, but the midwife's presence in the delivery room was the most crucial, I think.
Knowledge is power. Prepare yourself physically as well as mentally for the birth process. Of course, no one can tell how your own experience will turn out to be, but I found it helpful to read other mothers' experiences and was able to draw inspiration from them when it was my turn. Here's a book I highly recommend, particularly if you're interested in giving birth naturally (non-medicated): Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.
