Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of pregnancy is the shopping that it entails, not only for maternity and mommy-related stuff, but especially for the coming baby. A lot of first time moms go into a shopping spree as early as the first trimester. I myself did my baby shopping when I was in the second trimester, and tried to secure all the important stuff by the time I was around 8 months along, knowing the moving will be more difficult during the homestretch.

It's important to make a list of all things you need, and though there are plenty of layette lists and other checklists on the web, you will need to customize them according to your situation. For example, you may be receiving hand-me downs or will perhaps receive some items as gifts. Do you really need to buy a breast pump, or would you be able to borrow from the hospital? Is a baby monitor a must-have, or a nice-to-have? You'll have to decide that for yourself.

One item it took me a loooong time to decide on is the stroller. I've scoured the net for stroller reviews and though I would have wanted to have a baby jogger to help me get back in shape after the baby is born, I eventually opted for a lightweight stroller that suits our city lifestyle.

One more note to consider, especially if your budget is tight: You do not need to have ALL things ready before the baby is born. As long as you have the basics- clothes, diapers, bedding- the rest can be purchased on a need basis. Exciting as it may be to shop for baby, it's sometimes prudent to wait and see what you really need!
