What if there are Fetal Abnormalities?
Filed in archive Medical Issues on December 23, 2007
As I've indicated in my previous entry, a fetal anomaly scan is conducted to screen for anatomical abnormalities in your unborn baby. In my case, all was well, it appeared that the baby's developing fine, and that there were no abnormalities detected. But what if there were?

If there are signs of abnormality in your baby, you will be asked to do a repeat scan. If it is confirmed that there are problems, you might need further counseling regarding the gravity of the abnormality and your subsequent options. Some anomalies, such as accumulation of urine in the fetal kidneys, may correct itself towards the end of the pregnancy. Some, however maybe more serious, resulting to disability or even morbidity. In such cases, you may be advised options such as termination of the pregnancy, surgery or treatment after birth, or even surgery in the womb.
